The Dorn Method - How it works 3

Position 3 (part 3) in the practical manual application: Sitting position

Things to consider:

A Dorn Method Practitioner is more than just a Therapist he/she is a Health-Coach who guides Clients/Patients towards a Solution for their Back- and other health-problems by:

  1. Explaining the possible Causes of the Problem = Avoidance

  2. Applying a safe manual treatment as demonstration with and not just on the Patient = Demonstration session

  3. Teaching Self Help Exercises for long lasting Results = Health maintenance / Adjustment

The manual application (treatment part 3): Th8 - C1

ยป The practical manual session should start with detailed explanations about the treatment procedures and the possible causes or contributing causes of Spinal Problems, Different Leg Length etc., so the Client/Patient learns what to do in order to avoid this in the future.

This is followed by the practical hands on manual application in 3 different positions: 1. lying, 2. standing and 3. sitting

3. Position of the Client/Patient: sitting on a stool (without arm rests and height adjustable if available)

Thoracic and Cervical spine area: First the Clients/Patients thoracic spine situation (alignment) is assessed with the hands/thumbs on different parts of the thoracic spine from around Th8 upwards to Th1. This is done directly beside the spinous processes comparing left and right side of the body. Then the spinal column of the neck is assessed from C7 upwards to around C1-Atlas comparing left and right side of the body. The findings of the Practitioner and the feelings of the Client/Patient allow both to become aware of the present structural situation (alignment). After the assessment the re-balancing through guided self-regulation is done together with the Client/Patient by applying careful counter-pressure at the different areas left/right side of the structure i.e. beside the spinous processes (in the groove between spinous processes and transverse processes). At the same time the Client/Patient is doing relaxed, guided natural movements like swinging both arms naturally and alternate front-back and/or moving the head naturally side to side (No-No movement) or back to front (Nodding = Yes-Yes movement) depending on the treated area of the body. This is done in all areas for a very short time (seconds to minutes depending on the area and individual situation). After the re-balancing of any area on one side the structural alignment situation is again re-assessed so the Pracitioner and the Client/Patient can become aware of any possible changes (possible improvements). In case of any discomfort or pain during the actions the procedure will be adjusted or stopped if necessary. The same action is then done always on the other side of the body. This procedure demonstrates how this can be done by the Client/Patient him-/herself and it is absolutely safe, easy to do and should be tolerable not causing too much discomfort or pain!

» All remaining joints can also be re-balanced applying the same principles and are usually done if the Client/Patient has a problem in these other areas, i.e. Shoulder, Elbow, Hand, Finger, Thumb-base, SC-joint, AC-joint, TMJ, Ribs, Humps.

3. Position of the Client/Patient: sitting on a stool (without arm rests and height adjustable if available)

The re-balancing through guided self-regulation is done together with the Client/Patient. The joints-structures are moved by/with the Client/Patient in a dynamic but simple natural way guided by the DORN practitioner while a careful, gentle pressure (counter pressure) is applied with a gradually increasing amout of force without inducing too much discomfort or pain and only for a very short time (seconds to minutes depending on the area and individual situation).

Although the selfhelp exercise for humps can be done alone by leaning against a doorframe or similar it is recommended that this is done with the help of a partner (family member).

» This completes the full practical (manual) DORN session.

After the practical manual application the Client/Patient is alwasy shown some simple selfhelp exercises which are actually self-therapy exercises that copy the actions during the treatment part, and it should also be explained how to adjust uneven movements and bad postural patterns to achieve long lasting results and sometimes psychological connections are discussed which needs to be addressed to avoid reoccurrences.

» All the Selfhelp/Selftherapy exercises should be done by the Client/Patient best several times a day for a longer period of minimum 3 months to allow the system the necessary time and adjustemts for healing.

Complementing treatments like deep neuro-muscular massage etc. are advised to assist the Healing and to avoid that the tensed muscles are provoking or causing further misalignments!

NOTE: Never try to use the DORN Method on other people without proper training best conducted by an authorized DORN Method Instructor. Although the DORN Method and the Self Help Exercises are very safe if done correctly, the DORN practitioner is not responsible for any consequences resulting from the application during the manual session and Selfhelp exercises. In any case it is advised to consult your doctor first because health problems and back pains may have other causes than misaligned joints and vertebrae and should be checked by a trained medical doctor or other healthcare professional. The DORN Method has certain Limitations that must be cleared prior to any practical application! Remember: The DORN Method is NO Replacement for any other form of medical or non-medical treatment but it can be a very effective complement in an integrative medical system.
